Welcome to the mystery of leadership communication

𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗶𝘁 “𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗱”?

Many leaders seem to think so.

They draft an email, approve a company statement, or delegate messaging to corporate communications, believing the job is done.

But how do their teams feel?

Overwhelmed😔

Bombarded by a flood of polished messages, often crafted by AI or interns, that don’t truly connect.

This isn’t about whether leaders should communicate. It’s about how they can communicate less—but with far more impact.

We’re still surrounded by leaders who’ve learned to read, write, and speak—in that order. But shouldn’t we flip the script?

If we taught speak, write, read, leaders would first learn to attune to their audience, listen deeply, and adapt their messaging. The result? Shorter, clearer, and more effective communication🤷‍♂️

Start today to adapt your communication👇

1. Define Your Authentic Communication Style—and stick to it

How often are leaders pushed into using communication methods that don’t fit them? If you’re not a natural writer, why force yourself to write newsletters when a podcast or a quick video could be more powerful? Choose a channel that feels right and use it consistently.

2. Own Your Voice

Yes, you’re busy. Yes, your comms team can craft beautiful messages. But if all your communication is filtered through others, you lose authenticity. And in leadership, authenticity is credibility. People engage with real voices, not perfectly scripted personas.

3. Communicate in real-time

Employees don’t want to wait weeks for an official announcement when rumours have already spread. Timely communication builds trust. Share updates, challenges, and successes as they happen—it shows transparency and respect for your team.

4. Avoid sugarcoating

Over-positivity can come across as insincere, especially in times of change. If there are challenges, acknowledge them directly. Context, honesty, and a clear path forward will always be valued more than empty optimism.

5. Create Space for Real Conversations

Weekly check-ins and all-hands meetings often feel like a formality. Instead, build in reflection sessions where diverse voices can openly discuss, challenge, and contribute. Communication is a two-way street—treat it that way.

Are You Communicating or Just Broadcasting?

Hitting “send” doesn’t mean you’ve been heard. Your leadership isn’t defined by how often you speak—but by how well you connect.

So, are you truly engaging your team, or just adding to the noise?
